It was Devanâs voice. He could hear her talking, but the words were distorted and impossible to decipher. Still, just the sound made him want to hurl and he wasnât sure why. Heâd seen her one other time after sheâd sent him to the faery realm, but something was different now.
He was different now.
He was also very sick. There was a deep pain down in his chest and it was hard to catch a breath. He coughed to try to open up the airways and the force of it shook the bed on which he was lying. He wasnât sure whose bed it wasâor where he was.
Robbie clutched the headboard with both hands, head down and beads of sweat dripping from the hair at his forehead. âCâmon, baby. Give it to me. Harderâ¦â He didnât open his eyes to look at her, just kept moving, thrusting his hips again and again.
Devan was panting beneath him, moaning and trying to meet his demanding movements. Her tender hands were touching him, one grasping his shoulder and the other his back. They had attended a function at one of her fatherâs charities that evening and sheâd helped connect a few children from an orphanage to potential adoptive parents. She loved the children, ministering to them and helping them find new homes.
He always whisked her away for a wild romp on nights like these. She believed he was pledging his love to her. The Org thought he was being a stud, marking his territory. He knew it was something different.
This ritual was a sort of purge for him. Devan was all kindness and beauty and love. And after selling those children to the mercy of the Org vampires, he needed nothing more than to bury his cock in her goodness.
âDevvieâ¦â he moaned, smothering his face into the pillow. âI canât, Devvie.â
âUgh, donât call me Devvie.â A hand smacked his shoulder. âDid we have to bring him here?â
âListen, I know thereâs some bad blood between you all, but he needs help. Isnât that what you people do? Help those who need it?â
McKenna. She was here with him. He instinctively tried to lift his hand and reach for her, but weakness made his limbs weigh about ten times too much. He groaned and rocked his head back and forth in frustration.
âYou know, I remember something about weasels and the flu.â
He recognized Jillâs voice and confusion washed over him again. What the hell was going on? There was a pounding in his head, and he raked his hand through his hair before he squeezed his temples as if trying to collapse his own skull might help.
âIt takes âem down fast,â Jill continued. âThey die really quick. Itâs got to be the flu. I read about it in a book once.â
âWe need to get his fever down. Heâs burning up with 104.8 temperature.â
âGive him some Tylenol then.â Devanâs voice was filled with rancor.
âNo! Acetaminophen is dangerous for animals.â Again Jill.
A strong hand grasped Robinâs wrist, checking his pulse.
